Ačkoli v Číně, Japonsku a Egyptě existovaly rozsáhlé a uměle založené zahrady už několik tisíciletí před Kristem a tvořily protipól k divokýma neuhlazeným přírodním zahradám, myšlenka opravdové ozdobné zahrádky se zrodila teprve u Římanů. Díky práci otroků a vysoké nabídce úrodné půdy si mohli dovolit ten luxus a využívat úrodnou půdu jinak než k pěstování obživy. Trvalo sice několik století, než severoevropské obranné hrady nahradily zámky, ale záliba ve vlastních zámeckých zahradách se rychle stala také ve střední Evropě a Velké Británii symbolem společenského statutu vysoké šlechty a oblíbenou činností k ukrácení času.
První velké úspěchy zaznamenala zahradní architektura v období renesance. V období baroka byla zahrada okolo paláce téměř stejně důležitá jako budova sama.
