Za prvé si stručně řekněme, co přesně bude výsledkem našeho fotografování - lidé si pod pojmem prostorový (3D) obraz představují často rozdílné věci. Tak tedy: Zatímco běžné fotografie jsou ploché, 3D fotografie zachycují hloubku fotografované scény. Jeví se proto plasticky. Název 3D je ale trochu nepřesný - ve skutečnosti se jedná o takzvané stereogramy. Platí to, co v klasické fotografii: čím lepší přístroj (a fotograf, samozřejmě), tím lepší fotografie. Vyfotografované scény je třeba nějakým způsobem dostat do počítače. U digitálního fotoaparátu a digitální videokamery to není problém, u klasického fotoaparátu budete potřebovat scanner nebo takový fotolab, kde vám vyvolané fotografie uloží na CD-ROM. Spolu s analogovou kamerou lze použít speciální kartu pro počítač umožňující analogový vstup videa.
