Austrálie je plná zajímavých přírodních krás a podivuhodných rostlin či živočichů. Jsou zde i místa, která leckdy překonávají naše skryté představy. Místa podobná spíše pohádkovým krajinám dětské fantazie nežli běžnému světu, jak ho známe. Jedním z těchto pozoruhodných míst je národní park Purnululu v Západní Austrálii.
Tato oblast byla objevena výpravou Alexandra Forresta v letech 1876 - 79. Roku 1884 vzniklo na horním toku řeky Ord River, v jejímž povodí se nalézá pohoří Bungle Bungle Range, množství farem. Vzhledem k příznivým srážkovým podmínkám této oblasti bylo pastevectví velmi produktivní a odhaduje se, že se zde v roce1918 pěstovalo 673 000 kusů jatečního skotu. V roce 1967 byla celá oblast horního toku řeky Ord River prohlášena za přírodní rezervaci, aby mohlo dojít k obnovení značně zdevastované původní vegetace.
Samotný pozoruhodný vzhled pohoří Bungle Bungle Range byl však objeven náhodou mnohem později v roce 1980, kdy nad pohořím přelétávalo letadlo s filmaři ze Sydney, ti na zpáteční cestě z Kimberley Regionu náhodně natáčeli okolní krajinu. Po vyvolání filmů a jejich prohlídce se objevilo neznámé pohoří složené ze skalních věží, které byly oranžově a černě pruhované. Z důvodu snížení počtu návštěvníků a odlehlosti tohoto národního parku byla vybudována krkolomná a obtížná terénní cesta dlouhá 55 kilometrů, která je neudržovaná a sjízdná jen pro terénní vozy v dobrém technickém stavu. Od ledna do konce března je park téměř nedostupný, protože období dešťů má za následek rozvodnění creeků, a je tak znemožněn průjezd.
Samotné domorodé jméno tohoto pohoří - Purnululu pochází z jazyka domorodců kmene Kija, žijícího původně v této oblasti, a znamená ""mnoho hor"". Častější název Bungle Bungle je zkomoleninou anglického jména ""bundle"" (ranec), tak domorodí honáci nazývali trsy ostnitých trav rodu Triodia. V oblasti bylo domorodci vytvořeno množství skalních maleb, ty se ale nacházejí na východní straně pohoří, která není navštěvována. Pohoří skrývá také posvátná místa domorodců, jež jsou dodnes uctívána jako sídla duchů předků.
Flora a fauna
Na území parku roste mnoho vzácných rostlin. Nejvzácnější z nich je palma olejnatá (Livistona mariae), která se vyskytuje na severní straně pohoří ve dvou chráněných roklích. Je pozůstatkem původní vegetace z období pleistocénu před jedním miliónem let, kdy Austrálii pokrývaly deštné pralesy od východního až k západnímu pobřeží.
Do dnešních dnů se tato palma zachovala jen v několika stovkách exemplářů na třech lokalitách v Austrálii navzájem vzdálených tisíce kilometrů. Nejhojněji se vyskytuje v Palmovém údolí v pohoří MacDonnell Range, potom zde v Purnululu v Západní Austrálii a taktéž v okolí řeky Murchinson River v Regionu Pilbara - rovněž v Západní Austrálii. V rámci programu udržení genofondu byly tyto palmy úspěšně vysazeny opět v Queenslandu. Tato palma roste velmi pomalu, roční přírůstek je pouze 5 až 6 cm a největší exempláře dosahují průměrné výšky 15 metrů. Jejich stáří se pohybuje okolo 250 let.
Dále zde místy rostou křovité porosty akácií a keřů rodu Grevillea, při východním úpatí pohoří nalezneme řídké eukalyptové lesy. Většina okolní krajiny však je porostlá trávami rodu Triodia, kterým se říká Spinifex. Tyto trávy mohou tvořit osamocené trsy o průměru až 200 cm a výšce do 150 cm. Půda mezi jednotlivými trsy zůstává holá. Z fauny jsou nejpočetněji zastoupeni ptáci, těch se v této oblasti vyskytuje 130 druhů. Naleznete tu také mnoho druhů drobných vačnatců, plazů a tři druhy žab.
Místopis oblasti
V tomto pohoří se nachází mnoho roklí a soutěsek. Pro návštěvníky národního parku jsou v severní části pohoří dostupné rokle Echidna Chasm, Frog Hole Gorge a Mini Palms Gorge. Na jižní straně pohoří je dostupná rokle Cathedral Gorge, pěšky se lze vypravit na výlet do rokle Piccaninny Gorge. Atraktivní je rovněž vyhlídka Walanginjdji Lookout, odkud je pěkný pohled na divoké panorama pohoří Bungle Bungle Range s jeho až 200 metrů vysokými skalními věžemi.
Rokle Echidna Chasm se nalézá v severozápadním výběžku horského masivu Purnululu. Tato část pohoří je tvořena hrubozrnnými slepenci říčních usazenin, v nichž vznikla dlouhodobou erozí Echidna Creeku 130 metrů vysoká rokle se strmými stěnami, její šířka se pohybuje od 1.2 do 3 metrů.
Rokle se zařezává 1.5 kilometru do horského masivu. Místy je částečně zavalena velkými balvany, které se uvolnily z horních okrajů a dopadly až na dno nebo zůstaly zaklíněny v půli cesty. Dno soutěsky je pokryto ohlazenými oblázky a v období dešťů od ledna do března jím protéká creek. Rokle končí strmou stěnou vysokou 115 metrů, po níž stéká ze svého koryta Echidna Creek. I v pravé poledne je dno této rokle jen velmi slabě osvíceno, vysoko nad vašimi hlavami však sluncem rudě žhnou pískovcové stěny. Zatímco denní teplota se v horních partiích soutěsky pohybuje okolo 45°C, teplota na jejím dně je takřka konstantní mezi 24-27°C.
Rokle Mini Palms Chasm a Frog Hole Gorge se sice nalézají v těsné blízkosti rokle Echidna Chasm, jsou však tvořeny usazenými pískovci a slepenci diametrálně jiné zrnitosti. Obě rokle mají společné ústí a větví se až po cca 400 metrech. Jedná se o široké rokle, v dolní části kolísá jejich šířka od 8 do 19 metrů, horní část má rozpětí cca 60-90 metrů. Dno roklí je zavaleno rozměrnými pískovcovými balvany uvolněnými ze svahů. Protože zde každoročně pravidelně proudí voda, nalezneme na dně mnoho separovaných oblázků z okolních pískovců.
