Když se Ian Ramsey přestěhoval z Anglie do Miami, myslel si, že našel ráj. Brzy ale poznal, že v tomto městě s kobaltově modrým mořem, opalujícími se aligátory a plážemi vyzývajícími k míčovým hrám není nic takové, jak se na první pohled zdá.
Tak nějak začíná příběh, jehož četbou si mohli ukrátit dlouhou chvíli ti, kdo na jaře cestovali na palubě letadel společnosti Sabena. Příběh Iana Ramseye byl totiž otištěn v květnovém čísle jejího časopisu Passport. A proč se o něm tady zmiňujeme? Protože stál za přečtení. Kromě vlastního příběhu pak přinášíme na konci textu i pár užitečných informací pro cestu do Miami.
Už samotný úvod zmíněného příběhu zněl, alespoň pro našince, zajímavě: Představte si, že odjedete na 14 dnů do Miami. Pak se vrátíte do Evropy a jen co přistanete, v hlavě se vám rozsvítí kontrolka - musíte se vrátit. A napořád. Ramsey se tedy rozloučil se zaměstnáním i s přáteli a za týden už letěl přes New York na Floridu znovu. Neodradili ho ani jeho newyorští přátelé svým tvrzením, že do Miami se stěhují pouze zkrachovalé existence. Koneckonců - jako oficiální cíl svého stěhování si stanovil napsání knihy. A takoví zkrachovalci mohou být tím nejlepším vzorovým materiálem.
V Miami se rok dělí na dvě hlavní období - na suchou a horkou zimu a vlhké horké léto. Druhé ze jmenovaných období je pak kromě vlhka doplněno ještě jednou ""pozoruhodností"" - totiž hurikány.
Jakmile se tito nezvaní vetřelci přiblíží k pobřeží, obyvatelstvo zakryje okna dřevěnými deskami a po dalším nezbytném zajištění svého majetku se vydá na sever. ""V životě jsem nezažil hurikán a nerad bych o to přišel,"" popisuje příchod (to asi není nejvýstižnější sloveso, že?:-) svého prvního hurikánu Ramsey. A tak se nepřipojil ke starousedlíkům a zůstal. ""Byl jsem ve svém bytě. Za několik hodin začala kmitat okna tak intenzivně, jako by byla z gumy. Nakonec jsme se s mou domácí schovali pod schody...""
To byla chvíle, kdy se Ramseymu zastesklo po klidu staré dobré Evropy. Ne svalnatí homosexuálové s AIDS nebo starý námořník do nekonečna obtěžující svým příběhem, ani nepřátelsky vyhlížející aligátoři, ale až hurikán ho přiměl k návratu domů. Jeho kniha zůstala nedopsána. Miami má ovšem zřejmě v sobě zvláštní přitažlivost. O tři roky později se tam Ramsey vydal znovu. Těžko říci, na jak dlouho...
Co by se vám mohlo při cestě do Miami hodit: Miamské letiště leží asi 10 km západně od centra města. Z letiště do města jezdí každých cca 40 minut autobus, každých 30 minut pak na Miami Beach. Cesta taxíkem přijde na cca 20 - 25 dolarů.
Hotely jsou tu v létě lacinější než v zimě a většina z nich se nachází na Miami Beach. V centru města narazíte na spousty mrakodrapů, směrem na západ najdete Malou Havanu, která přechází v Coral Gables s bulváry a budovami ve středomořském stylu a bohatým nočním životem. Jen pozor na onu výše zmíněnou přitažlivost - stěhování z naší domoviny je přece jen o poznání složitější.
