Ale třeba ani Praha si nevedla špatně.
Kde se odreagujete
Hodnocení možnosti odpočinku v jednotlivých městech probíhá na základě zjištěného počtu a různorodosti restaurací, bohatosti hudebních a divadelních představení, počtu kin a dostupnosti sportovních zařízení. Všechna města jsou srovnávána s New Yorkem (to platí i pro hodnocení dalších parametrů), kterému je přidělen standard - 100 bodů.
Kromě New Yorku toto hodnocení získala ještě města Sydney, Los Angeles a Washington DC, následována Bostonem, Melbourne, Chicagem a San Franciskem s 97,5 body. Jen pro zajímavost - z evropských měst si dobře vedla Paříž s 96,5 bodu. V první dvacítce se ještě objevila např. australská města Brisbane, Adelaide a Perth. Nejhůře se umístilo hlavní město Konga Brazzaville s 12,5 body. To bylo z velké části zničeno v bojích, nejsou tu žádná kina ani divadla a jen několik restaurací s omezeným sortimentem.
Dobré hodnocení amerických a australských měst v žebříčku je podle organizátorů průzkumu zapřičiněno především dobrou dostupností sportovních zařízení, zatímco pokud jde o kulturu a restaurace, tam si většina světových měst vede stejně dobře.
Doprava
Tentokrát začneme od konce - pokud jde o dopravu, nejhůře dopadla města Madras a Bangalore v Indii s 34,5 bodu. New York jako etalon měl opět 100 bodů, zastínila ho však města jako Atlanta s 131,5 body a samozřejmě vítězové, Kodaň, Oslo, Singapur a Vancouver se 148 body.
Při hodnocení kvality dopravy hrála svou roli hustota veřejných pravidelných linek i jejich spolehlivost (včetně jízdy včas) a možnosti dopravy obecně - tedy např. zvládání hustého provozu a dopravních zácp.
Celková kvalita života
Pokud jde o celkové posouzení toho, jak se ve kterém městě žije, dopadly ze všech kandidátů nejlépe Vancouver a Zurich se 106,5 body, Vídeň se 106, Kodaň, Ženeva a Sydney se 105,5 body. Na druhém konci žebříčku skončily Brazzaville a Pointe Noire v Kongu (s 26,5 a 31,5 body), Chartům v Sůdánu (32 bodů) a Bangui vw Středoafrické republice (32,5 bodu).
Při hodnocení se vycházelo z 39 kritérií, kromě těch výše zmíněných např. i z kvality zdravotní péče a vzdělání, úrovně kriminality a celkové bezpečnosti, z vymahatelnosti práva, z kvality životního prostředí včetně. např. posouzení klimatu, dostupnosti zboží denní potřeby nebo z úrovně politické svobody a stability. Výzkum se přitom snažil brát zřetel na kulturní odlišnosti tak, aby posouzení kvality života bylo pokud možno co nejobjektivnější.
Jednotlivé regiony
Velmi dobře si v průzkumu vedla evropská města - nebo lépe řečeno - západoevropská města. 14 z 20 v žebříčku nejvyšší kvality života dosáhla právě ona. Z průzkumu také vyplynulo, že se smazává mezera mezi východem a západem - jinými slovy - že se úroveň života ve východoevropských městech přibližuje k západoevropské úrovni.
Nejlepší hodnocení si kromě již zmíněných evropských měst vysloužily rovněž Bern, Frankfurt, Mnichov, Duesseldorf, Amsterdam, Oslo, Stockholm, Brusel, Luxembourg, Paříž a Londýn (v tomto pořadí) s více než 100 body. Londýn si vysloužil slabší hodnocení (v porovnání s další západoevropskou konkurencí) za kapesní krádeže a za dopravní zácpy.
Ve východní Evropě je nejvýše hodnocena Budapešť s 90,5 body, za ní se ztrátou 2 bodů následuje Praha a o dalších 6,5 bodu méně získala Waršava. V této souvislosti ještě stojí za zmínku, že se žádné z těchto měst nedostalo do první padesátky - k tomu totiž bylo zapotřebí alespoň 99,5 bodu (mimochodem - ty získala Osaka). Jenom pro srovnání: např. Bělehrad obdržel 43,5 bodu, Sarajevo 48,5, Moskva 59,5 a Petrohrad 58,5.
Velmi dobré hodnocení získala také Kanada - z 20 nejlépe hodnocených měst zde leží 3: Vancouver, Toronto a Montreal. Z dalších severoamerických měst si dobře vedlo San Francisco (103,5 bodu) a Honolulu (102,5), průměrem je zde hodnocení 100. Podstatně nižší hodnoty si vysloužila města v Mexiku. V Latinské Americe si dobře vedly např. Montevideo (91 bodů) a Buenos Aires (91), podstatně hůře se žije v San Pedro Sula v Hondurasu (48,5), v Havaně (48) nebo v Port au Prince (46,5).
Do první dvacítky se vešla města Sydney (105,5 bodu), Auckland (105), a Melbourne (104), z dalších měst z takzvané asijsko-pacifické oblasti jmenujme Tokyo (103), Yokohamu (102), Kobe (101) a Singapur (101), pod stovku se dostal Hong Kong s 93 body. Na spodních místech žebříčku se v této oblastila umístila čínská a vietnamská města.
Na hodnocení měst středního východu se hodně podepsala zdejší nestabilní politická situace. Izraelský Jeruzalém tak dostal jen 81,5 bodu, Tel Aviv 83,5 a např. Bagdád pouhých 33 bodů.
Velmi nízká hodnocení obdržela většina afrických měst. Na spodních příčkách se umístila již zmíněná města Brazzaville, Pointe Noire a Chartům, na opačném konci pak lze spatřit jihoafrické Kapské město nebo Johannesburg (83,5, resp. 83 bodů).

Žebříček společnosti Wiliam M. Mercer je určitě zajímavou sondou do každodenního městského života - o nic méně, ale také o nic víc.
