Krátké ohlédnutí
Historie Belgie je úzce spjata s jejími sousedy. Dobývaly ji germánské a keltské kmeny, žila pod nadvládou Francké říše - ve 14. století pod nadvládou burgundského vévodství zažila nebývalý kulturní a společenský rozkvět. Po smrti Karla Smělého (1477) ji ovládli Habsburkové, v roce 1516 se stala součástí Španělského Nizozemí - a rozkvět skončil s příchodem inkvizice. Posléze Belgie patřila i Francii a Rakousku, v roce 1830 získala nezávislost.
Ačkoli Belgie prováděla neutrální politiku, nevyhnuly se jí v minulém století 2 světové války. V roce 1914 i o 26 let později ji Německo porazilo. V roce 1948 vytvořila spolu s Nizozemskem a Lucemburskem Benelux. Následoval poměrně silný ekonomický růst a volba Bruselu za sídlo úředníků Evropské unie a NATO. V 70. letech poznamenalo zemi napětí mezi Valony a Vlámy, proto v roce 1980 dostalo Valonsko a Vlámsko autonomii. Belgie je konstituční monarchií s federativním uspořádáním (kromě Valonska a Vlámska je její třetí součástí hlavní město Brusel).
Rady na cestu
Belgie je známa svým často deštivým počasím, proto si na cestu nezapomeňte deštník. Až se budete rozhodovat, kdy sem vyrazit, určitě dáte přednost spíše letnímu období před zimou. Měli byste ovšem ještě vědět, že 21. července se slaví Den státnosti.
Na kolik vás návštěva této země přijde? Ceny jsou podobné jako v okolních zemích, snad jen o poznání vyšší. Antverpy ležící na řece Šeldě jsou druhým největším evropským přístavem. Známá je zdejší židovská čtvrť a diamantový průmysl, milovníci malířského umění si jistě okamžitě vzpomenou na jméno Rubens - a vydají se navštívit Rubensův dům s galerií. V Antverpách stojí rovněž největší belgický gotický kostel (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Katedraal) a Královské muzeum umění. Za návštěvu stojí i zdejší zoologická zahrada s řadou exotických zvířat.
Bruges bývá označováno za nejlépe zachované evropské středověké město. Ať už je to pravda, nebo ne, nelze mu upřít primát pokud jde o turistickou návštěvnost. Centrem všeho dění jsou středověký trh a hrad. Nechybějí ani muzea, ve kterých se lze seznámit se životem několik set let zpět i s tehdejším uměním (muzeum Stadhuis). Krásný rozhled si můžete vychutnat na věži středověké pevnosti (připravte se ale na vyšlápnutí několika set schodů).
Gent má dobu své největší slávy za sebou. Ve středověku byl druhým největším evropským městem, hned za Paříží. Naleznete zde zachovalou pevnost; a nesmíte minout ani Sint-Baafskathedral s mistrovským dílem Jana van Eycka - dvanáctidílným Gentským oltářem (v jeho středu je nejznámější deska s názvem Klanění mystickému beránku - Adoration of the Mystic Lamb). Navštívit můžete i Muzeum krásného umění s řadou děl Hieronyma Bosche.
Do Arden se zřejmě vydají milovníci krásné přírody nebo zájemci o histroii druhé světové války. Ať už sem zamíříte kvůli říčním údolím a hlubokým lesům, nebo za jednou z velkých válečných vřav, vhodným výchozím bodem pro vás zřejmě bude město Namur, kam lze dorazit po železnici i některou z četných autobusových linek. A když už jsme se zmínili o cestě mimo města - samozřejmě se můžete vydat i na pláže poněkud studenějšího Severního moře.
Jak cestovat
Po Belgii je zřejmě nejlepší cestovat vlakem - železniční síť je tu totiž skutečně hustá. Na některých železničních stanicích vám navíc zapůjčí i kolo, což patrně přivítáte, jste-li sportovněji založeni a míříte na plošší sever země. K cestě po Belgii můžete využít i autobusy. Pokud nehledíte na peníze, lze si připlatit za vypůjčený automobil.
