Země, kde se chodí vzhůru nohama
Opera v Sydney, Velký bariérový útes, klokani, medvídci koala, pes dingo, eukalypty, blahovičníky, aboriginiové - to je jen několik atributů nejmenšího kontinentu na Zemi, kontinentu, jenž je osídlen jen necelým dvojnásobkem obyvatel České republiky.
Původními obyvateli australského kontinentu jsou tzv. aboriginiové. Výzkumy ukazují, že do Austrálie přišli před 20 - 50 tisíci lety z východní Asie (různé prameny uvádějí opravdu až takovéto rozmezí). (Již 20 tisíc let před nimi sem připluli jiní lidé, podle všeho podstatně robustnějších postav, kteří však zřejmě nebyli předchůdci aboriginiů.) Postupně osídlili celý kontinent. Byli rozdrobeni do stovek kmenů (odhaduje se 600 - 700), každý se svými zvyky a jazykem (nebo alespoň nářečím).
Když je evropané objevili, žili na úrovni doby kamenné. Neobdělávali půdu ani nechovali dobytek. Jediným domácím zvířetem, kterého aboriginiové používali k lovu, byl pes dingo. Lovili nejčastěji pomocí dřevěných oštěpů s kamenným hrotem nebo s hrotem z tvrdého dřeva. A nezapomeňme ani na proslulé bumerangy. Ty existují v mnoha variantách - k lovu se nejčastěji používala jejich ""nevracející se varianta"". (Někdo možná namítne: co to je za bumerang, když se nevrací? Nezbývá však, než se smířit s holou pravdou - ne každý bumerang se vrací.) Ta měla při zásahu zvířete přerazit jeho nohy nebo páteř. Mimochodem - existuje i takzvaný křížový bumerang - dvě plochá dřeva svázaná do kříže. Ten se také nevrací, ale zato se po dopadu na zem odráží a hodí se tak např. k lovu pádících pštrosů.
Pohled zpět
Austrálii oficiálně objevil v roce 1606 Holanďan Willem Jansz, nelze však vyloučit, že na ni již dříve narazil některý ze španělských mořeplavců. Tehdy totiž bývalo zvykem některé zajímavé objevy tajit. Známější než Jansz je Abel Tasman, který se k Austrálii vydal v roce 1642 z pověření Východoindické společnosti - domníval se, že dospěl k jižnímu cípu kontinentu, jak se však ukázalo později, přistál v dnešní Tasmánii (průliv mezi Tasmánií a Austrálií byl však objeven až v roce 1798). V roce 1770 obeplul celé východní pobřeží kontinentu kapitán James Cook, který jej prohlásil britským vlastnictvím a pojmenoval ho Nový Jižní Wales.
V roce 1779 navrhl Joseph Banks, aby Británie vyřešila prostřednictvím Nového Jižního Walesu svůj problém s přeplněnými věznicemi. A skutečně, o 7 let později sem kapitán Arthur Philip (který se stal první správcem nové kolonie) přivedl 11 lodí se 750 trestanci. A brzy následovali další. Aby se uživili, nezbylo jim nic jiného, než pracovat (pro jistotu nad nimi ovšem samozřejmě visely i biče dozorců). V následujících desetiletích sem byli lákáni i svobodní osadníci, ale teprve v roce 1851, když tu bylo objeveno zlato, proběhla první výrazná imigrační vlna. Ta měla neblahý dopad na původní obyvatelstvo, které bylo vyháněno ze svých území a masově vražděno.
Prvního ledna 1901 došlo ke sjednocení jednotlivých kolonií, do kterých bylo území Austrálie rozdrobeno (do té doby mezi nimi existovaly hranice podobně, jako např. dnes v Evropě) a Austrálie se stala oficiálně nezávislou na Británii - resp. stala se dominiem britské říše. Mnohé vazby však přetrvaly. Austrálie stála na straně Británie v první i druhé světové válce. Ve druhé jmenované ji USA bránily před japonskou invazí. Po válce se sem vystěhovala řada obyvatel Evropy, v 80. letech pak mnoho asiatů.
Dnešek
Pevnina se dělí na 6 provincií: Western Australia, Northern Territory, South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales a Victoria. Již z letmého přehledu historie je patrné, že v Austrálii žije velmi multikulturní společnost, jejíž složení se na různých místech liší podle konkrétních historických okolností.
Většina Austrálie leží v tropickém a subtropickém pásmu s horkým podnebím, jen její nejjižnější část má mírné podnebí. Zima začíná v červnu, jaro v září, léto v prosinci a podzim v březnu. Teploty jen zřídka klesají pod nulu (kromě horských oblastí). Zcela na severu jsou jen dva druhy podnebí, horké a suché střídá horké a vlhké. Nejčastěji se doporučuje návštěva Austrálie na jaře nebo na podzim, v podstatě se tam ale dá jet kdykoli - v létě je ovšem třeba počítat s poměrně vysokými teplotami na většině území.
Levné ubytování lze pořídit (po přepočtu) od 250 Kč za noc (záleží ale samozřejmě na místě, kde se chcete ubytovat), průměrný hotel pořídíte za minimálně trojnásobek. Elektrické napětí je 220 V.
Levné jídlo přijde na cca 100 Kč, v restauraci počítejte spíše s dvoj- až trojnásobkem. V restauraci bývá zvykem nechávat 10 - 15 % spropitného. Běžně lze platit platebními kartami (a to i na místech, kde byste to skutečně nečekali - např. při nákupu suvenýrů od domorodců).
Uváděnými zdravotními riziky při cestě do země jsou úpal a kousnutí hada nebo pavouka.
Kam se podívat
V Austrálii je více než 500 národních parků, ve kterých naleznete deštné pralesy, mořská pobřeží, horské oblasti i pouště. A samozřejmě města...
Návštěvu Austrálie patrně začnete v hlavním městě Nového Jižního Walesu - Sydney. Co o něm říci? Patrně každý zná zdejší operu (byla postavena v letech 1959 - 1973), která se jako obrovská mušle vypíná nad další atrakcí - sydneyským přístavem (Port Jackson). Centrum města leží jižně od přístavu a trochu připomíná Manhattan v malém. Nejstarší částí města jsou The Rocks, kde s nacházejí geologické a hornické muzeum, řada galerií, ale také mnoho restaurací a hotelů. Na Macquarie Street naleznete historické budovy řady veřejných institucí - parlamentu, státní knihovny, kostela St Jamese nebo Sydneyské nemocnice. Darling Harbour zase představuje vhodnou destinaci pro příjemné trávení volného času - najdete tu spoustu zeleně, akvárium, ale třeba také casino. Nechybí ani čínská zahrada a kino IMAX (s velkým ""3D"" plátnem). Nejznámější pláží je Bondi Beach, jinak si ale můžete vybírat podle své chuti.
Melbourne je druhé největší město Austrálie. Bylo založeno teprve v roce 1835 skupinou tasmanských podnikatelů a v roce 1851 se stalo hlavním městem Victorie. Centrum města leží na severním břehu řeky Yarra a je od ní vzdáleno asi 3 kilometry. Severojižní převážně ""pěší"" tepnou města je Swanston Street, dalšími ""nákupními"" ulicemi jsou Bourke Street a Collins Street. Dominantou města je katedrála Svatého Pavla, známá je i radnice a městská knihovna nebo lázně. Atrakcí je i trh Královny Viktorie, na jižním břehu pak např. botanická zahrada nebo gigantické Crown Casino. Za zmínku rozhodně stojí Phillip Island s ""promenádou tučňáků"", kteří zde vždy k večeru vylézají na břeh a ""procházejí se"".
Velký bariérový útes (nazývané také Velký bradlový útes nebo Velká korálová bariéra) je další atrakcí, kterou si při návštěvě Austrálie patrně nenecháte ujít. Táhne se takřka podél celého východního pobřeží kontinentu, přičemž na severu je místy vzdálen i jen 50 kilometrů od pevniny. Z útesu vystupuje nad hladinu nepřeberné množství ostrovů a ostrůvků, z nichž na některých se lze i ubytovat. Abyste mohli obdivovat veškerou krásu podmořských útvarů, musíte se samozřejmě ponořit pod hladinu - a k tomu můžete využít řadu nabídek místních cestovních kanceláří. Výborně se dá potápět i poblíž již zmíněných ostrovů, vyhlášené jsou např. ostrovy Heron nebo Lady Elliot.
Vhodnou turistickou základnou je na severu země město Cairns. Nejen tropická příroda všude okolo, ale také možnost podnikat odtud výlety za řadou australských atrakcí (Green Island, Fitzroy Island, národní park Daintree River) či si jen užívat desítek kilometrů pláží z něj učinily skutečný ráj turistů. Stejně vhodnou turistickou základnou v této části země je podle průvodců Cooktown.
Darwin je přirozenou základnou severu Northern Territory. Tropická atmosféra a silné asijské vlivy z něj dělají to, čím je - malou výspu jižní Asie v Austrálii. Za návštěvu stojí nejen místní pláže, ale také např. akvárium. Ve čtvrtky a neděle večer (v sezóně sucha) se doporučuje návštěva Mindil Beach marketu - kromě pozorování západu slunce ve stínu kokosových palem si tu můžete užít i plodů nejrůznějších asijských kuchyní. A pokud máte rádi krokodýly, potom pouvažujte o návštěvě krokodýlí farmy, která se nachází asi 40 km jižně od města. O dalších 100 kilometrů jižněji pak leží Národní park Litchfield. Přibližně ve stejné vzdálenosti leží i národní park Kakadu, který bývá označován za jeden z přírodních zázraků kontinentu. Návštěvníka tu čeká nejen divoká příroda, ale také kamenné umění aboriginiů.
Adelaide, metropole Jižní Austrálie, nabízí návštěvníkovi Jihoaustralské muzeum, muzeum Migrace (kde se dozvíte vše o imigračních vlnách, které v historii ""zaplavily"" tento kontinent) nebo pro zábavu pláže Glenelg s ""Magickou horou"". Za návštěvu stojí i rituální místo Uluru (Ayers Rock), moderní metropole Západní Austrálie Perth, sídlo byrokratů Canberra (již od roku 1901 hlavní město země), údolí Barossa, kde se prý pěstuje nejlepší víno z celé Austrálie, i Velká oceánská cesta, která se táhne po jihozápadním pobřeží Victorie a nabízí neopakovatelné pohledy na pobřežní útesy a dovede vás i do národního parku Port Campbell nebo do rekreačního městečka Lorne.
To, co však zřejmě budete nejvíce obdivovat při návštěvě jediného obydleného kontinentu, který leží celý na jižní polokouli, je příroda. Zvířata, která volně nežijí nikde jinde (je třeba připomínat řadu druhů klokanů, koaly, ptakopysky, ježury nebo psy dingo?) i rostliny, se kterými se také jinde ve volné přírodě nesetkáte (eukalypty, stovky druhů blahovičníků odhazujících starou kůru, přesličníky, žlutokapy nebo akácie). V severní Austrálii můžete vidět krajinu s typickými stavbami termitů, východní pobřeží lemují Australské Kordillery, nazývané rovněž Australské Alpy - jakmile spatříte pár fotografií z této části země, pochopíte proč. (Za poznámku rozhodně stojí, že se v okolí Austrálie rádi zdržují žraloci.)
Při cestách po Austrálii je asi nejvýhodnější vypůjčit si automobil. Druhou variantou na stejné téma je automobil si koupit - a před návratem opět prodat. Když budete mít štěstí, vyjde vás to podstatně levněji. Po zemi můžete rovněž cestovat autobusy nebo vlaky (druhá varianta je ovšem spíše méně obvyklá - je pomalejší a dražší). V tomto případě ovšem poněkud ztrácíte svobodu volby...
