Objev Ameriky bývá připisován Kryštofu Kolumbovi - i přesto, že tento kontinent zřejmě dávno před ním objevili Vikingové. Kolumbus ho ovšem jako první přinesl evropanům k nohám - byť se sám domníval, že dorazil do Indie.

Kolumbus vyrazil na cestu se třemi loděmi v létě roku 1492. A to díky podpoře ze strany španělských vládců Ferdinanda a Isabely. Jeho cesta byla úspěšná - dorazil totiž k Bahamám a odtud na Kubu a Hispaniolu (dnes Dominikánská republika a Haiti). Zde zanechal část posádky, která měla hledat zlato, a vydal se zpět, aby o svém objevu podal zprávu.

Ke břehům Ameriky se však Kolumbus ještě dvakrát vrátil, vždy však s představou, že jede k pobřeží Asie. Roku 1498 se dostal až k ústí Orinoka. V roce 1499 pak jeden z Kolumbových kapitánů, Vincente Pinzón, bádal podél pobřeží dnešní Brazílie a Guyany a ital Amerigo Vespucci objevil Venezuelský záliv a ústí Amazonky. Tomuto muži byl také poměrně dlouho připisován objev Ameriky (odtud i její název).
