Je to zoufalý. Pátek odpoledne, na předměstí Toronta vrcholí špička. Kolem sviští auta jedno za druhým, ve čtyřech pruzích v jednom směru, v průměru sto aut za minutu. Každý se zarytě drží volantu, tupě zírá před sebe a kalí to kupředu co to jde, aby už byl z toho pekla pryč. Připadám si jako mravenec, stojící před nějakým obrovským umělým mechanismem, jehož chod není možno nijak narušit. Živý cizí element v plně technizovaném světě. Během těch pětačtyřiceti minut čekání mě minulo asi 4500 aut, než mě z té beznaděje vysvobodil mladý kluk a popovezl na potřebnou výpadovku, pro stopa ve směru na "Najgrfóls" už přijatelnější. Nebylo to daleko, tak deset kilometrů, ale v některých místech se tvořila zácpa, a tak byl čas si krátce pokecat. On odhadl, že jsem Čech!
Šikovně mě vyvezl z toho pekla a na rozestavěné ploše vedle magistrály zanechal mému osudu. Přesunul jsem se za křižovatku na další nájezd, a než jsem se rozkoukal, zastavil perfektní veselý chlapík s malým "vanem". Vzadu seděl připoután bezpečnostním pásem na sedačce hezký hošík synek jeho známého byli spolu pozorovat mušličky na pláži. Když mi to sdělil, připadal jsem si jak ve snu. Kde tady může být pláž a na ní mušličky?! Všude kolem jsou obrovské průmyslové komplexy, rozlehlá skladiště, staveniště a dálnice. Chlápek dřív za mlada taky hodně stopoval, měl docela projetý Státy i velkou část Kanady..., byl to trošku takový kerouacovský týpek. Hned se ptal, jestli jsem měl v Kanadě nějaký problémy s policajty, stopovat na highway je zakázaný. On dělá někdy maséra, někdy kuchaře na jachtách a teď šetří na vlastní jachtu, chce to objet kolem dokola koule... Taky jsem se dozvěděl, že Američani jsou daleko bláznivější než Kanaďani. To jsem ještě netušil, že jednoho opravdu z nejbláznivějších potkám už zanedlouho. Ten dobrý člobrda mě popovezl o něco dál, než sám potřeboval jet, a vůbec se nám nechtělo rozloučit se, jak jsme byli zaujatí vzájemnými dotazy a odpověďmi. Osaměl jsem v hukotu projíždějících aut už to nebylo tak zuřivé jako na předměstí Toronta, ale hukot to byl. Přesunul jsem se k nedalekému nájezdu a pozoroval zvolna zapadající slunce. Ale to mi už stavil VW-brouček a divoký kluk Bernt mě zval dovnitř. Prý jede taky právě do Niagara Falls bydlí tam a pracuje jako barový naháněč. Už toho má ale plný zuby, chystá se změnit klima a vyrazit do Evropy. Původ neprozradil, ale typoval bych ho na Chorvata zkoušel na mě několik českých a slovenských, značně zkomolených slovíček. VW to švihal hodně přes 100 km/hod, a tak než jsem se nadál, opodál hučel pověstný vodopád. Zastavili jsme přímo na nábřeží před vodopádem. Bernt mně ukazoval park, kde bych mohl přespat prý v pohodě, a ochotně se se mnou rozdělil o cigára, když jsem si o jedno řekl (koukat na Niagáru to chce cigárko), dal mi vizitku a zmizel v turistickém mumraji.
Pět set metrů od rušné Hill Street už ale panuje poměrný klid, narušený jen tu a tam vracející se skupinkou rozjívených turistů. Vzal jsem to podél mohutných útesů a nad hlubokánským kaňonem si pod širákem ustýlám asi sedm metrů od kraje toho srázu.
